If a witness cannot provide the last known location, Side Scan Sonar is the primary tool used to find drowning victims and evidence underwater. When searching for a drowning victim, the sonar can look 50’ to 100’ on each side. The St. Clair County Dive Team’s Sonar is over 10 years old. Repairs and maintenance this year alone have cost over $8,000.00. Our goal is to replace this unit with newer technology that will allow for better resolution, faster search speeds and lower maintenance cost. Bathymetric swath sonar and gap filler technology will bring us back to the leading edge of underwater search.
